About Free State Cellars

Between two nations, there was No Man’s Land. Forty miles of moss-draped bayou and backwater swamp on the Texas-Louisiana border, historically claimed by neither the United States nor Spain, was haunted by outlaws, and was etched into history as the Free State of Sabine. Legends were born here. So were we.

Uncork Your Own Legend

Three ingredients go into every bottle at Free State Cellars: dedication, quality fruit, and joie de vivre embodying the Cajun art of living joyfully and eating well. Around here, eating well is practically a religion, and our small-batch wines embrace what Texas grows, crafted around the bold global flavors that define this corner of the world.

The Heirloom Estate Muscadine Wines anchor the cellar, grown on our own nine acres. The Texas Select collection ventures into the Hill Country and High Plains for old world varieties: French Viognier, German Riesling, Spanish Tempranillo, California Cabernet that have found their roots in Texas soils. Our Country Fruit Wines bring it back home, built on blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries grown by our fellow Texas farmers. This is what winemaking looks like when it’s rooted in a place.

Rooted in Family

Early mornings, long days, and late nights among the vines. Stories swapped over a shared bottle. Corks popped in celebration of all of life’s many turns. At Free State Cellars, family isn’t just who we are; it’s how we make wine.

Our estate vineyard was planted by one of Texas’ true wine pioneers, Alfred J. Flies. A four-time honoree of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association, and the man behind over 70 competition medals including ten belt buckles and four International Best in Class honors from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Taste his finest work in our Heirloom Wines collection.

His legacy is in good hands. We craft our Texas Select wines and Country Fruit wines honoring his dedication to the art celebrating what this land grows best. This is what it looks like when a family pours everything it has into a glass.

Born on the Bayou

Planted in 1984 along the banks of Adams Bayou, our estate vineyard has been growing something special for over four decades. Seven acres. More than 1,000 vines of two muscadine varietals: Noble for our rich reds, Magnolia for our crisp whites.

Muscadine is America’s only native grape, a true super fruit forged by the brutal heat and humidity of the Gulf Coast into something with extraordinary flavor, deep color, and serious staying power. It’s a grape that doesn’t just survive here. It belongs here.
